Oil Pressure Gauge Rising and Dropping

SmokinStangs - Mustang Forum! The home of the SmokinStangs Laconia - Mustang Rally
I thought my motor was starting to hurt after all the punishment it has taken the last three years.

When the motor was cold the pressure would stay in the 50-60 range(stock Fox gauge estimate) but once warmed up occasionally drop down to the 10-20 range while cruising and then bounce back up to the 40-50 range.

I realized this weekend that the nut holding the sensor wire on the sending unit was loose..tightened it up and just road tested. Stayed at a steady 50-60 or in the middle of the Stock Fox Gauge the entire 30 minute cruise. More beatings to come...

For those that dont know the oil pressure sending unit on a Fox is on the driver side of the motor-just above the oil filter.

That being said, I think you ought to take one of the open spaces for Ed day on Sunday and really give that beast the beating it deserves !!

You guys, the ones who are always saying....."I'm trying to kill my motor, so that I can get a new one".............have all the luck!! There's a couple on the site here, that been saying that for a while now, but the motors just keep on going!!

I think it's a good testiment to the Ford block, and in your case the 5.0L push rod engine.

Glad to hear it was something simple!!

Mine started doing something similar a few weeks ago. Turned out that the sending unit was bad. I called Autometer and they sent my a new one free of charge. Works perfect now.

Wish i could've been so lucky. LOL

That's what my gauge was doing just before "arriving" at Mann's.

Nice find Mark. It's def a little scary seeing that gauge drop like that.

Maybe next year when I get some decent rubber and can hook the car in something other than 3rd gear and over 65mph....

I have a similar issue, at start up its at 50psi (autometer guage), aprox 10min later it drops to 25-30 psi. Im guessing this is
somewhat normal, but is 25psi a bit too low. before i shift at around 3k rpm it'll rise to 35psi. im on stock oil pump and stock heads
I noticed my oil is getting darker color sooner then before and a bit of blue smoke out the exhaust, im i burning oil, bad valve seals?
the engine doesnt make any unusual noise, not really using oil (maybe 1/4 of a quart)... any suggestions. im leaning towards valves.
