Should be pretty straight forward.
- Start at the very rear of the console (area facing the back seat / where the backseat ashtray is located) & pull off the plastic cover.
- This should reveal several good sized bolts....remove them. This should allow you to remove the backseats ashtray assembly, further revealing additional good sized bolts...continue by removing those bolts.
- Once those are removed the whole center console assembly should pull right out in total.

I guess by your instructions that it's nothing like removing the center console in an 87-93 car?
My bad....I just realized you have an 1986 Vert. The info I provided is IN-CORRECT for your year/model range.Should be pretty straight forward.

Center Console
1979-1983 Black Center consoles will work with all 1979-1986 Mustangs. However, if you are using a 1979-1983 center console in a 1984-1986 Mustang, you may want to swap your stock clock/warning system into the 1979-1983 console. 1984-1986 Mustangs have clocks with an orange/amber display mounted in their center consoles. You can remove a 1984-1986 clock/warning system and swap it into a 1979-1983 console to keep everything displayed as how it should be for your year Mustang. 1990-1993 black center consoles will swap into any 1987-1993 Mustang. 1990-1993 black consoles will need a hole drilled for the fuel door release button.

Open the Console Arm Rest Pad, look down inside and there are 4 screws, remove those.
Keep armrest up, you will see 2 smaller screws near the latch catch, remove those 2 screws.
Carefully pull up on the coin tray as they call it, where the eBrake goes through, use caution as there are 2 plastic catch tabs at the bottom, once free, remove.
Next open the ashtray door, remove the ash tray by pulling up. Look under it aand there are 2 more screws to the floor, remove those.
The only thing left holding you is the infocenter wiring at the back, and the shifter bezel.
The infocenters from 79-82 are the same, 83-86 are the same, but either will work in any year, just visual changes to the graphic and backlighting from green to red.
