    Glass Roof on the 2011-2012s

SmokinStangs - Mustang Forum! The home of the SmokinStangs Laconia - Mustang Rally
Can anyone explain to me how the glass roof on the new 5.0s work..?

I have a 2012 Brochure..(Just dreaming at this point...) and it shows the glass roof that it opens. My question is how far does it open-they only show it cracked like 3 inches.

Seems like it cant really open all the way because there is no place for it to go, but maybe I am wrong..?

Thanks in advance if anyone knows

    Nevermind....

    It does not open.

In the brochure it looks like it does, BUT it is actually the screen that you can pull over it was open, not the Roof.

New Mustangs to get Factory Installed Glass Roof

Maybe it was the Giugiaro Concept, or maybe they feel the need to spice things up since Ford’s “shock and awe” barrage of last year’s special edition Mustangs is wearing off. Maybe it was the promise of a refreshed Mustang each year, or maybe it’s the 200% increase in large sunroof productions in the last five years. Or maybe it was because the Corvette did it?

We don’t care why, but it’s cool – well other than the 130 degree interior temps in the summer, but who’s splitting hairs? If the coupe or convertible roof options don’t do anything for your libido, maybe a factory installed glass roof will. For an add compromising the coupe’s versatility, headroom or climate-controlled environment
“Mustang is an icon in our product lineup, and we are committed to keeping Mustang news fresh every year,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president, Global Product Development. “As the automotive landscape becomes increasingly competitive, features such as a panoramic glass roof will help differentiate our products from the competition.”
    The Nitty Gritty

Tinted privacy glass is wrapped over a coupe like body, maintaining the structural integrity of the Mustang. To keep things nice and cool in those aforementioned hot days, the tint cuts down on the sun’s nasty infrared rays and cuts vehicle cool down in half. A manual roller blind is built in, allowing owners to further control exposure on sunny days.
The specially formulated glass also protects interior fabric material from solar radiation deterioration and discoloration by reducing solar light transmittance. To help improve acoustics and Mustang’s interior quietness, the glass also features a layer of vinyl that reduces noise, vibration and harshness.
The glass itself is safety glass, meaning that it shatters without sharp or jagged edges. Assembly takes place at the Automotive Alliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan and installation happens at Ford’s adjacent vehicle personalization facility.
How Bad Do You Want It?

For the low low price of $1,995, “the new glass roof allows Mustang customers to let the sun shine in for half the price of moving up from a coupe to a convertible.” It available as an option on both the V-6 Mustang and Mustang GT.

This Mustang enthusiast made a YouTube video...based on the 2011 Panoramic Roof

Here's what he had to say about it: This is a video I put together of my brand new 2011 Mustang V6 with some interior videos showing what the glass roof option looks like. My Mustang has every single available option in it and I absolutely love this car!

I cant decide if I would want this or not. I am shying away from the Vert, because I have some high horsepower plans if I ever decide to buy one of these and I dont think the Vert is the prudent way to go. Not sure a glass roof is all that prudent either if by chance the shiny side does not stay up...!!!!

Thanks for the info and vid though.

Problem I have is I dont love the look of the Verts with the top up or down. I also feel the coupes are kind of dark and cramped-my Fox has alot more glass and feels brighter inside-maybe its just me.

In case anyone wants to know why I dont like the look of the Verts with the top down, it is because I own a Saab Vert...you may say WHAT...?????

Well Saab Verts when the top is down you do not see it...It gets totally hidden underneath a trim piece so the car looks smooth and sleak when going down the road. You dont see the ugly top rolled up or have to put a silly boot on it. Not sure why Ford has not done this-if they did I would be a big fan.

Pics of Saab Vert so you can see what I am talking about

Glass roof = Greenhouse in your car. No thank you...i would never get that option.

if you are worried about the convertible chassis holding up to high horspower...you'll be fine. It's nothing a little suspension and bracing won't take care of. Anything more than 500 or 600 hp on the street is just dumb anyways.

As for the convertible top, I can totally agree with you. the # 1 complaint i have about my car is the way the top looks when it's down. I wish it was stored away much cleaner than it is. The cheap boot that ford gave me I actually never use becuase it fits like ass

At least with the new cars, the top folds away and looks much neater. I'd be willing to be the reason the top doesnt fold away like it does on a saab, porsche or any other nicer vert is because of costs, weight and complexity. Simplicity has always been what the mustang is about........

Still surprised no sunroof on the new stangs. Was the one feature i thought that took away from the car. Without one, the car just seems so much more cramped. I don't even put the sunroof in on my fox. It just stays in the hatch and i put a car-cover over the car. Guess i'm used to how open it feels to drive like that.

I like the glass roof. We live in the NE so i could deal with a few months or searing temps. Would come in handy in the winter as the greenhouse effect would help melt snow off the car
