    Car won't start....

SmokinStangs - Mustang Forum! The home of the SmokinStangs Laconia - Mustang Rally
Cars been up since late October (99), went out yesterday to try and start her up and when i turn the key she just turns over and over and over, wont start ? SO I went and checked to see if there was any fuel pressure (pushed down on the little schrader valve thingy) while the key was in the on position...and nuttin...nothing happened, no spray no release no nuttin. So is the fuel pump bad? Or could it be the FPS? I did a code check and its spitting out a P0191 error which is a fuel pressure issue. This error has been spit out before on multiple other occasions, but the car was working fine then...so I just cleared it and went on my way. But today clearing it made no difference...it just wont start. Could sitting there for 3 months in the cold done something i don't know about?? Thanks in advance for your time and thoughts =)...oh one more thing...I opened the trunk and my buddy turned on the key...had my head to the top of the fuel tank (through the trunk) heard nothing? Would the pump coming on be a loud enough noise that I'd hear or is it really quiet?

Should hear the fuel pump prime when you first turn the key to on.

Start checking for power to the fuel pump at the fuse box and at the inertia switch in the trunk, make sure the inertia switch didn't accidentally trip somehow.

Isn't there also a fuel pump relay? Not a cut and dry as it used to be. Just did search:

I just checked voltage coming from the FDPM located at the rear left side of the car behind the panel in the trunk...there is voltage going FROM the FDPM out to the pump. I checked the inertia switch and reset it...(it wasn't tripped)...so should i now go to the actual pump?

Yes, check for power as close to the pump as you can. Prob is wiring is on top of the tank.

Not uncommon for critters to make a nest up there and chew the wiring up. Very strange for pump to work when car gets parked and then not work a few months later.

Have a buddy crawl under rear of car and put an ear to the plastic fuel tank cover. Turn key to on. He should hear the pump prime then. If not, then the fuel pump ismdef your issue.

Then you just gotta troubleshoot why. I'd def check wiring going to the pump

I had mine work fine driving into the garage, then nada a month or two later. The wiring had fried a bit somehow. Prob because I had put in a 255lph pump not a long time before. Replaced some wire and it was good to go. There are also usually connectors down around the rear of the tank behind the bumper, and these can get corroded. It's worth checking them before doing an R&R on the tank.

My fuel pump failed last winter while car sat in garage over winter. Ran fine before I parked it and disconnected batt. Went to start in spring, no fuel pressure. Power and ground to pump ok. maually applied full 12 volts at connector between tank and bumper, while listening with stethescope, I could actually hear the pump staining trying to run. Pulled tank, wiring ok, bought a new pump from ford, ok with new pump. Car had only 29000 miles. I figured maybe sitting inactive over the winter caused failure, So now once a month I hook up batt and cycle key a couple times to activate pump and keep it active and lubed. This all happened the day before drag racing started! I was supposed to work that afternoon, but called in cuz my car was sick :)
