    2V, 3V, 4V - Chit Chat

    SmokinStangs - Mustang Forum! The home of the SmokinStangs Laconia - Mustang Rally
    Interesting conversation that took place a while back.....Titled: 302 engine 2 valve or 4 valve?

    Q: Is the 1995 5.0 engine a 2 valve or 4 valve engine?
    A: it is 2v. the 5.0's in this section are pushrod. There are 4v OHC 5.0's though

    Q: So the Cobra is a 32 valve, is that far superior then to the 2 valve engine? Is that getting a lot more air to the cylinders and improving the performance a lot?
    A: 96 up Cobras come with a 4.6L 32 valve. I wouldn't say that it is far superior, just good engineering. Yes, 4v heads do flow better.

    A2: Much more efficient for sure.
    Even the 3V engines are very efficient.
    The 93 Cobra 5.0 has 235hp. A new 3V 4.6L has 315hp.
    Add 5lb of boost to a 3V 4.6 and gain alot more power than putting 10psi on a stock 5.0.

    2V = 2 valves per cylinder
    3V = 3 "" ""
    4V = 4 "" ""

    The 5.0 has the camshaft in the block, the 4.6L engines have the cams in the heads.
    2v and 3V 4.6 are SOHC (one cam per head) and the 4V is a DOHC (2 cams per head).

    The big deal about 4V heads is the curtain area... they can flow more at lower lifts than any 2 valve head and as much if not more at higher lifts also. These heads came in a few different variations because they are from billet. The different flow int port versions like cleveland vs windsor, the bigger high port 4V cleveland ports will able to supply more air at higher rpm or for bigger ci engines. 2 valve cams or timing or thinking should not be applied to 4 valve engines, they are diffrent animals. This info page is out of the ford mod book...

    For what it's worth this 5.0 Cammer is still a 4.6l mod motor, its only has 5.0l of displacement

    Q: Is the 4v 04 cobra engines superior?
    A: I think all of the 4v 4.6's are superior, performance wise. Not so much in the cheaper/easy to work on

    Scratching your head on the 3 Valve??? Take a peek.......

    This has been done before......by FORD. Look up the SOHC 427cid engine

    The 427 Ford... Ford had there own multi-valve 3V pushrod version back in the 60's
