So as most of you know, this past Sunday I broke down on my way to the Father's Day Show.
Get it home. She wont turn over. Hook it up to the code reader, it comes back to the distributor. Buy a new distributor, it turns over and runs. Take it for a test drive and when it hits 3000rpms, it chokes, bad. Hook it up to the reader again, this time it comes back to the distributor AND ignition modual. So we change out the ignition coil and the modual, hoping this solves our problem... Nope, still choking at 3000rpms.
Checked the reader again, and yep, came back to the distributor and ignition modual.
Just for the fun of it, we checked what the ground spout was putting out for a reading, and it's .20ohms. Which it's right where it should be.
My dad thinks that we were sold a bad distributor. Is this possible?
Any suggestions as to what you may think it may be????

Oh that sucks, hope you get it fixed soon.
Does it choke like the ECM rev limiter is cutting in? Of course, it should not at 3K, more like 6K, but if the count is somehow getting doubled it could happen. Is the speedo behaving or acting weird below or at 3K?

well from my expierence I can tell you it's way easier to rule out possiblities before throwing parts at it......
you could have definitly been sold a bad distributor...the easiet thing to do would be to try another one and see the outcome. Chances are if it does the same thing it's not the distributor.

Was anything else removed or "moved" while you were changing out the dizzy?
I just returned a brand new Optima battery the other week....it was junk, so yes, defective parts happen. A few weeks before that I swapped out a brand new $800 MSD box that had one pass on it...it was also junk. Doesn't mean that is your issue, but when you are done ruling everything out, it mayt very well be the cause.
Bruce-
No, it almost seems like it's just not firing on all cyls. But it's fine up to 3k. Under 3k, it seems to run normal. Speedo is normal.
The codes came up for the distributor and modual, so we figured, why not throw in the 25$ coil too...
Nope. Every time something was removed, we tested it out to make sure that was or wasn't the problem.

Unless I'm mistaken, that's exactly what the rev limiter does to squelch the increasing revs. My point was that it usually cuts in at 6K, and if it somehow counted 2 pulses for every rev instead of one, it would do that at 3K instead of 6K. Just a guess, but it still sounds possible to me. Anyone else think so, or am I out in left field?
