    BAD03COBRA's '03 Cobra

    Explore Kenny Brown Performance today!!
A little history of my 2003 Cobra

I bought my car in November of 2003. Car was sold as a "demo" w/ 1800 miles on it. In December of 2003, the IRS was removed. I knew I was going to beat the crap out of it and with the car so new and all the problems with the IRS, I had to remove it. So it's first mods was a mild built solid 8.8 w/ 3.90s, 31 spline axles and eaton posi unit, K&N cold air kit and SLP Catback. These were the only mods I had on the car come spring time. I did get it to the track and the car went a best of 12.5x @ 112 which I was super happy about. I just traded in a 1999 Dakota R/T that ran high 13s. The car was my daily driver for 2 years until I got a winter beater. This car has seen rain and snow and the last time I drove it to the track and raced, it ran 11.8x @ 123 on street tires (not drag radials)

I messed around for 3 years with the stock pulley's and blower. With all the current bolt ons the car made 436whp and 415wtq. I ran a best of 11.73 @ 119 with a crappy 1.6 60' and the car had decent weight reduction weighing 3550lbs. Near the end of the 2005 season I added a 2.93 upper pulley and the car made 430whp and 430wtq on a Mustang dyno and went 11.43 @ 119. Winter of '05/'06 I did a LOT. Ported blower, 4# lower, Dynotune nitrous kit and a bunch of other things. I met Pete from Performance Dyno at the track in 2005 and decided to use him for tuning. On his Dynojet, the car made 495whp and 500wtq and with a 60 shot of nitrous made 545whp and 585wtq. A little lower than most but I tried to not let that get me. The 2006 racing year brought alot of 11.0 and 11.1 passes. More than I can count. Finally in October of 2006 I met my goal and ran 10.98 @ 125 with the stock longblock and 6 speed in the car weighing around 3500lbs. A few weeks prior to this I did try the nitrous a few times and went 10.73 @ 129 but my ultimate goal was 10s without nitrous.

So I achieved my goal. Now what? I wasnt interested in a twin screw blower yet and wanted to go faster. Lots of talk about automatics online around this time and I thought hell, why not. Didnt really think musch about it, just kind of did it. So a Lentech 4r70w was tossed into the car with a PI triple lock up converter. on the dyno with no other changes the car made 465whp and 465wtq, a 30whp and 35wtq loss from t56 to 4r70w. But the car showed gains right off the bat. The 10.98 @ 125 was in cool October air the previous year. I didn't get the car out till July due to it being hit in June on the trailer on my way to the track.. So first trip to the track the car ran 10.95 @ 124 in July heat with a similar 60'. Changed the stall a few times in 2007. Lenny @ Ultimate Converter did a great job on the 3rd try (previously set up by PI) and the car closed the year out running 10.8x @ 126.

Didn't change much for 2008. Got some more weight out of the car and switched to a different rear suspension setup as that was my goal, to get the 60's down. The new setup ended up being horrible and I couldn't get any better than a 1.52 60' where before it and more weight, I was in the high 1.4s. So went back to stock style suspension and back into the 1.4x range. I upped the nitrous shot to a 100 shot and the car made 580whp and 595wtq. Fast forward to September, I got the car to a 10.69 @ 130 on the blower and 10.09 @ 140 on the 100 shot. Went to the dyno in the beginning of October and saw the tune was off for whatever reason so it was tweaked and some power under the curve was gained on the blower tune. I went up 25hp on the nitrous pill and the car made 602whp and 620wtq! Made a few final trips to NED the last week of October. Best blower only pass was 10.52 @ 132 w/ a 1.48 60' and on October 31st the car went 10.01 @ 138 w/ a 1.49 on the nitrous. That was my 9 second pass but it was a COLD Friday night street night and no traction was found.

2009 was an AWESOME year for the Cobra! Since I was getting more into drag racing I wanted to move to a more drag oriented transmission. No lockup and no overdrive which would make it lighter in weight and have a lighter converter for the motor to turn. After lots of research between the TH400 and the C4, I went with a C4 built by Frank Lupo's Dynamic Transmissions. It's their fully built C4 w/ manual valve body and also a converter from them that stalls to 4800rpm. I also added manual brakes and steering to the car for weight.

On its first pass in April the car got to about 1200' and I lost a u-joint in the driveshaft. The shaking was so bad @130mph it popped the airbags in the car. I did however get my ticket while passing the booth on the tow truck and it read 10.36 @ 132. Just beat my best by almost 2 tenths! After everything was sorted out I only had one more trip to the track before heading to Pinks All Out @ MIR in June. At Pinks, the car went 10.42, 10.36 and 10.36. I was extremely excited and knew the car had more in it. The 60's were 1.44-1.46 and the weight was 3250 w/ me in it for those passes and my next step was to work on the suspension.

With a few suspension changes I got the car into the 10.26-10.28 range @ 132-133. I then added a ported lower intake to the car and instantly the car went 10.21 @ 133 and then a 10.19 @ 134. Not only was the car the fastest "online recorded" 03/04 Cobra, but no one has ever seen more than 132mph from a ported eaton car. Next I added a trunk mount intercooler water box. It holds 6 gallons of fluid and has a 6" opening to pour lots and lots of ice in. On the dyno previously, we were able to get 20whp and tq on the dyno just by adding ice to the mix.

With the trunk mount and a few more suspension changes I got the car in to the 10.08-10.10 range @ 134mph with some nice 1.38-1.40 60's. It was coming to the end of the year and I decided to mess with the tune a bit. 11.4-11.5 was the norm on my wideband running 23 degree's of timing. The new trunk mount was keeping the IAT2's under 100 degree's through the traps so the car was not getting hot at all. I added a couple gallons of 104 to the car, leaned out the tune a bit to 11.8-11.9 and the car went a tad faster. Similar 60's but we were now in the 10.04-10.06 range at a high 134mph. I went ahead and bumped the timing by 1 degree for a total of 24 degree's of timing. The car immediately went 10.01 @ 135 on a 1.37 60', it's best ever.

In October / November I ran at 3 different tracks (NED, Cecil and Atco) and the car ran 9.94 @ 135 w/ a 1.36 @ NED for its best ever with quite a few 9.98s and 9.99s including a couple 9.99s at Atco. This is, to anyone's knowledge, the FIRST Eaton powered Cobra into the 9's. I'm also still running a factory oem longblock, valve covers never lifted.

My quest to go faster continues for 2010 and Im looking for some event wins and a new best pass in the 9.80 range.

it was out last year...sept it was at the Bass Pro shop cruise night. I removed the heat exchanger though so that make it not friendly on the street. I was too into racing oct/nov to go anywhere else cept the track. next year might be the same

well after being a huge lazy ass for the last 3 months I realized its March in 2 days and I have to get my shit together.

    2010 goals...what cha think?

    1.35 60'
    6.20 @ 108-109
    9.80@136

Trans is being refreshed right now at Dynamic. no change in stall from last year.

got the rear end almost in the car. need a better drill bit to open the holes up for the 5/8" bolts. but at least you can see how short it is.

and here is the interior as of today and the couple hours I had with it. almost ready for the full 10 point. dash removal isnt the hard part. its all the extra wiring I have for guages and nitrous and whatnot all under there that has to be removed....sucks ass
