Hi everyone!
I have a little issue that hopefully someone can answer for me. Because the original engine in my 65 was junk and has to be rebuilt, I put an 85 302 in the car with a 68 C-4 Tranny. Everything is almost ready to roll except for one small detail; how does the kickdown hook up to the carburator for proper operation? The new engine has an Edlebrock Performer 600cfm 4bbl with an electric choke. The kickdown linkage up to the intake is the original. After there I'm lost! Please help!
Not sure......but interesting topic......
Wanted to expand this topic though

As to "What is carburators kickdown?"
Kickdown is what causes the transmission to downshift into second gear when the throttle is almost wide open. Also referred to as passing gear. There will be a rod, cable, or even an electric device that goes between the butterfly/throttle body control and the actuator/pressure valve on the transmission. On newer cars, it is controlled entirely by the PCM.
Carburetors have multiple stage throat openings that open in series as power is demanded of the car. By "kicking" down or stepping on the gas pedal to the floor for a short period ALL of the intake throats open at once and the car can deliver the maximum torque.
So if you have a four or a six barrel carburator then all the barrels pen up with gas and air flowing thru each one! POWER!
What does the kickdown cable do?
It switches your vehicle into the next lower gear example third into second without mving the shifter it is sincd with your throttle so when you lift the gas it returns back to third gear or fourth depending on what your driving.

Is the downshift rod connected at the top and hanging loose at the tranny?
Well one thing after it is all connected...
I think you need to put the accelerator to the floor (wide open throttle with engine OFF) while you adjust the rod linkage at the top.

no, all the connections at the tranny are secure. Trying to figure out how to hook it up to the carb...
Do you still have the original linkages to the carb and accelerator pedal?
Are we talking a cable or a rod?
The kickdown rod connects to the outermost lever on the linkage.

All I have is the rod that connects to the tranny and mounts on the Intake Manifold. Nothing that hooks to the throttle linkage. I did find a kickdown kit at CJ Pony Parts for the C4 transmission that I figured I'm better off buying instead of screwing up the connections. Thanks for your help!
Yeah, you need the linkage from the bellcrank on the manifold to the carb.
The cable kit is a common way to get around it .
Good choice and good luck.![]()
