1984 Mustang T Top Coupe Coyote 5.0 Project

This will be The Build Thread for my wife’s 1984 T Top Factory Black Coupe.

Here is the basic Plan as of now:

-Smooth Engine Bay
-Fresh Black Paint-will a little extra something-we just came up with a few days ago
-Coyote 5.0 crate motor
-Performance Automatic 4R70W Coyote kit
-4.6 K member-with control arms, new springs, struts, steering rack all bushings etc
-New rear control arms, springs, shocks
-3.73 gears
-Rear brakes: Rear Disc Conversion
-Front brakes: Upgraded rotors and calipers
-Complete EFI Fuel System-new tank, lines, pumps etc
-New headlights and 84 tail lights, emblems, door handles, cowl etc
-Nitto NT 05 Tires with SVE Anniversary Chrome Rims
-Interior will be redone with mostly a stock look and all Black

If you are wondering…yes my wife is working on her own car. She has been in the garage with me for hours already working on removing the interior, cleaning the interior pieces we are going to re-use and she is helping me pull the engine and trans this weekend.

Here is the T Top Coupe in question. It is a pretty solid car, but still needs a ton of work:

Here it is arriving from TN on 9/29/11

Here it is in our garage before we touched it---and yes it is leaking on my nice new garage floor!!!

Interior when it arrived-had seats from an 87-93 gray and the rest of the interior was some crappy light blue color.

First weekend we had the car...this is what the interior looked like after we gutted it...

The interior will be completed once the car is back from Pro Tree-it will be the last piece of the puzzle. We did however already prep and paint the dash. The interior will be all black. I will paint all the plastic interior pieces black(I did this in my Fox 3 years ago and it still looks perfect-need to prep the pieces by cleaning them thoroughly, use adhesion promoter and then numerous coats of trim paint). We will have the door panels re-done and buy everything else black(dash pad, rug, arm rests, headliner, seats etc.

Here is the new black dash.

I love the crank windows-I dont know what it is about them, but I agree they are just Cool...

I also have to say...I never owned a four eye Fox and never had any desire to own one, but I have to say now that we have one..I am really into it and realize how cool they are.

Thanks everyone. We are making progress. Tomorrow we finish removing the rest of the lights, door handles, door locks etc so it is ready for Paint at Pro Tree when they are ready for it..!!!

The 302 is in the Classified Section of the Forum and on Craigslist along with the AOD trans. I can not say they are operational so they are being sold as parts only.

Last weekend we cleaned and painted all the plastic pieces. They were all some funky blueish gray color.

I used the same process that worked for me on my Fox plastic.

-Clean all pieces thoroughly...we washed with soap and water and then used alcohol on areas like the glove box and ash tray etc-that have alot of human oils.

-3 coats of Adhesion Promoter

-4-5 coats of DupliColor Black Trim Paint

3 years later the pieces in my Fox still look perfect. I would not suggest doing arm rests or door panels, but the plastic pieces hold up if done right.

Before:

2810

2811

Finished Product....they actually look much better/brighter in person. I also did something with the dash trim piece that goes around the gauges, but you will have to wait until the car is done to see that as it will go with the paint scheme.

Thanks Stan.

I am just going to buy new black door panels, arm rests and a dash pad. The door panels are trashed, there is no dash pad and the arm rests are cheap enough.

-------------------

The dash trim piece that goes around the gauges looks Sick....It has about 20 coats of a certain type and color of paint on it...I tried something and it actually worked, but everyone is going to have to wait for that until next spring...that will be the last piece of the puzzle..!!

Have today off and kind of bored, so I decided to order the rest of the parts we will need for the exterior once the bodywork/paint is complete..(I know not even close yet, but still need some motivation and excitement over the holidays..!!)

Here is what was ordered:

-Headlight Kit with front directionals and side markers
-Headlight Trim Rings
-Headlight hardware
-1983-84 Taillights
-Cowl and lower windshield molding
-Wipers
-Door Handles
-Hood struts so we can toss the prop rod
-Antenna delete..no radio, just run the Ipod off the deck.
-5.0 emblems for the fenders. Went with the 2011/newer style to match the Coyote. Tough decision since I love the Fox 5.0 emblem(even have it inked on my back..!)

***Also ordered the Coyote Engine Cover(I know way ahead of schedule; however my lovely bride has a great idea for the painter to tie the theme together under the hood.

That was a big discussion and decision. The vision is to keep the 84 looking stock on the outside except maybe the wheels. My 90 is so altered from a GT with the LX tails and Cobra bodykit, 2.5 cowl hood, we want this one to look like a stock LX T Top Coupe rolling down the road..

Should be back from media blasting soon and we will post up some pics

I have a Marti Report for the Coupe and the guys from Four Eye Pride commissioned a T Top Study from Marti Auto Works as well and it confirms just how rare T Top Coupes are, most notably the 1984 model year.

1984 was the last year Ford built T Top Coupes.“Statistic courtesy of Marti Auto Works.” There are a few 85 and 86 T Top Coupes out there, but it appears they were built aftermarket and not Factory Built.

So how rare is this Coupe...????????????????

There were only 624 T Top Coupes built in 1984.. “Statistic courtesy of Marti Auto Works.”

As the pics show on page 4, for a car that is about to turn 28 years old it is in decent shape. There is some collision damage that was revealed on the passenger side rear quarter above the wheel well and a couple of rust spots which are in hidden areas that need some attention.

All in all we are happy and can't wait for the engine bay smoothing and body work to start!

We are also glad we listened to Dana and did the underside!

So far we could not be happier with the work the guys over at Pro Tree have done and the attention to detail. They have a detailed plan going forward and we are all on the same page.

--------------

Ordered the Ford Racing Coyote Control Pack today as well as the front and rear SSBC Disc Brake Kits that will be installed(plan to have the calipers and dust shields powdercoated) before install..

Next week I will order the Show Quality Hydratech-Hydroboost setup so we can stop this thing.

The Coyote control pack is being ordered now because Dana is planning ahead and wants to mount the drive by wire gas pedal prior to finishing the floor off. The Hydratech hydroboost setup takes a month for them to finish in show quality so that is being ordered now.

More Parts will start to be ordered and installed once the body work and paint is done..stay tuned

--------------

Only problem building this coupe for my wife is I feel bad for my 90...it needs some upgrades! Right now plan is for me to remove the engine and trans in my 90 after SmokinStangs Laconia 2012.....have Pro Tree work some magic smoothing the engine bay...I was toying with a coyote turbo for my 90, but I think After the engine bay is smooth i will bring it home and stick with a dart block Windsor and my s trim..I plan on attempting to build the motor myself or maybe have the short block built and I will handle the rest...also planning on going with an auto and even putting the ac back in!

But i forgot this thread is about the Coupe

Thanks Stan....a ton of blood sweat and a few beers in my 90, but I have more plans for it....won't be as nice as the t top coupe, but a 550-600 rwhp cruiser that looks good and has ac and can run easy 11s works for me!!!

Back to the coupe... I recently re-painted the tail light housings and replaced the lenses with 83-84 ones. I will post up some pics maybe tomorrow after I grab a few of the finished product outside.

TAIL LIGHT RESTORATION

After 27 years the Tail Light Housings and Lenses were faded, so here is my process to restore them:

-Removed the old lenses and then worked the old sealer out of the housings with a screw driver. It takes some time to work all the old sealer out, but it will come out eventually.

3029

3030

-Cleaned the Housings up and then hit them with a few coats of Adhesion Promoter and then about 6 coats of Trim Paint

3031

3032

-Installed new lense sealer and clips

BRAKES

This car is being built as a nice cruiser so it does not need a Ridiculous Brake Setup. This is what we decided on. It is actually the same setup I run in my Fox and have been very happy with it.

Front

87-93 Spindles-Powder Coated Semi Gloss Black
73mm SVO Calipers
87-93 Dust Shields-Powder Coated Semi Gloss Black

3102

3103

Rear

SSBC Turbo Coupe rear calipers
SSBC rear dust shields-Powder Coated Semi Gloss Black

3107

3104

*The Powder Coater talked me out of doing the Calipers. He suggested Ceramic Caliper Paint, which I did use on my Fox and it still looks great 4 years later. So the front and rear were covered in about 5 coats each.

Hydratech Hydraulic Brake Assist System.

The Coyote is so wide, you can not run a traditional Fox Power Brake Booster/Master Cylinder setup, because there is not enough room. Some guys have used a hydroboost setup found on the Cobras and Mach 1s, but when I saw the Hydratech setup I decided to go that route...

Few thoughts on the project...

The body was not as clean and straight as initially thought, so the bodywork effort has been much more involved and put us well over our initial bodywork budget. HOWEVER..!!!

My wife and I could not be more pleased with the Efforts and Outcome...The body is so straight it almost isn't a Fox anymore

Seriously though we can not thank Dana and Josh over at Pro Tree/Automotive Collision for their advice, craftsmanship and willingness to exceed our expectations!

So if any of you think I am disappointed a new power plant for my 90 has to wait another year or so, don't worry I am OK with it because this T Top Coupe is coming out Exceptional....

Minor Set Back/Issue

I know people have been wondering what is going on with this Project. We have been dealing with a Header Issue.

The BBK Coyote Swap Headers Do Not Fit with the 4r70w Automatic Trans-these headers can be run with a standard trans or a C4 from what I hear. At this time no one makes headers that work with the 4r70w trans.

So with that Said...we will be Modifying the BBK Headers to make them work. They will be cut and re-shaped/extended etc and then re-coated...

Here are a few pics I borrowed from someone else doing the Swap.

The Driver Side Header hits near the Shifter Linkage...

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa176/only90s/IMAG0133.jpg

The passenger side 02 sensor needs to be moved, plus the collector is too close to the trans pan.

whats going to happen is the engine and transmission are going back into the car and the left header tubes will be cut halfway down and then 4 custome tubes and the collector will be fabricated to work . the right header tubes need to be modified a small amount to keep the collector from running along and right against the pan . we need to keep the heat away from the transmission pan for obvious reasons . after the headers are made then they will be recoated and the lower portions of the tubes will be wrapped if needed for header heat transfer to transmission pan issues . ill be taking pics as the process goes along .

4R70W Trans is In, but it has created more problems other than the Headers not Fitting:

-Driver side floor has to be altered so the shifter linkage setup will fit...
-Custom Trans mount needs to be fabricated, since the custom/reworked headers are going to interfere with the stock one..
-A stock 79-95 alum driveshaft fits though..!!!

So a few weeks back I called Latemodel Restoration and informed them of the BBK Header Clearance Issues we were having with the Performance Automatic 4R70W trans...>They have now updated their website as follows:

Description
If your latest project involves installing a NEW 2011 Ford Mustang Coyote 5.0L 4-Valve engine into a 1979-04 Mustang then BBK has the Headers you will need to complete the installation. The Coyote swap headers are mandrel bent high flow 1 3/4" tubing with 3" collectors, making them perfect for both n/a and boosted builds. These headers have a ceramic coated finish and offer the very best in BBK engineering to ensure your 5.0L Coyote Motor Swap goes as flawless as possible!

Installation Note
Some after market transmission that have larger housing may cause clearance issues with these headers. Transmissions such as Performance Automatic have much larger casings and clearance work will be necessary.

Ok...I know people are looking for an update.

The bottom line is we are still hard at work on this project; however the 4R70W trans has created quite a few challenges and probably put us 2-3 months behind schedule.

As far as we know, there is not another 4r70W running behind a Coyote in a Fox yet. No one makes Headers that will work with this trans first off, then a trans mount needs to be fabricated to work with the new custom headers and the driver side floor needs to be modified as well.

With all that said we have a Competent Fabricator that is coming by the shop when he can to help us out. The Good thing is he has a Plan and already started. These things just take time with everyone's schedule and vacation etc.

We will post up some pics of the Fabricating work as it goes forward.

Bottom line is we are not going to rush it at this point. We are focused on building this Fox right the first time.

So our Goal is to try and Finish it up for SmokinStangs Laconia in September, but if we can not...it will make the Rounds next year at Carlisle, probably Mustang Week and of course SmokinStangs Laconia 2013..............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So we have our Coyote Fox Swap 4R70W Headers fabricated and they are out getting Ceramic Coated now. As of today I do not know of another set out there.

The photos below show how the Original BBK Coyote Fox Swap Headers had to be Modified to work with the 4R70W transmission.

We also had to move the driver side floor in an inch or so and fabricate a transmission cross member to get this whole thing to work, but it looks and works great now...

Yes...Scott Rod Panels are the way to go; however you need to know how to Weld and handle some bodywork if you want it to look like the job Pro Tree did on this car. You can buy Rivet in Panels from Scott Rod if you dont want it to be totally smooth.

You could PM Pro Tree regarding the paint, not sure what it is, but in person it looks Great.

The welding is the easy parts, it's the sanding and smoothing that are the hard part.

I'm just curious as to what filler they used. I'd hate to ne on the receiving end of the bill you got for the bodywork and paint on this car :)

I know people are watching this Thread and waiting for an update. The Reality is I decided not to post any more pics or updates and everyone is going to have to wait to see it in person next Spring or Summer.

JUST KIDDING...

Seriously I have been busy and the guys over at Pro Tree have been busy. We have been working out a few boring details lately and that is why I havent posted as the following is not very exciting:

-Fitting front sway bar-we used SN 95 sway bar brackets and an Agent 47 relocation kit-also going to machine a 3/8 spacer to drop it down a little more to clear pump

-Fitting heater hoses, radiator, fan, overflow tank and cold air. We decided to weld a larger nipple on the radiator instead of running an adapter as the Coyote hose is larger than the nipple on a Fox radiator. The BBK Cold Air tube will be cut and welded to fit.

-We ordered a bunch more fittings to finish up the fuel system and the power steering and hydroboost hoses-like everything else they will be hidden.

We most likely will have the car running sometime in December and once it is done I will post up an update with pics and videos.

Until then everyone will have to wait...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Little update...

Power Steering and Hydroboost Lines all run in the inner fender and under radiator support-basically hidden.

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa176/only90s/SDC11841.jpg

Bulkead Fittings on either side of inner fender/engine bay to Hydroboost Unit..

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa176/only90s/SDC11840.jpg

Flexalite Fox Radiator upper nipple was cut off and a larger nipple was welded on. Most Coyote Swaps are done with hose adapters and we did not want to look at an adapter under the hood.

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa176/only90s/IMG00649-20121211-1008.jpg

The Black Coolant/Heater tube in the pic used to have a nipple in the front that goes to the stock Coyote overflow tank...most swaps are done by capping the nipple. We did not want to look at a cap so the tube was removed and nipple cut off and re-welded, then painted black.

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa176/only90s/SDC11842.jpg

We are still working on a few more custom things under the hood in terms of the Cold Air intake/breather tubes/PCV etc...

Dana is now deep into re-wiring the car and boy he is doing a Great Job. Bascially he has spent over 4 days so far cleaning up the old/stock wiring harness and the only wires in the car will be what is needed to operate the car in its current form.

Should have more updates in a few weeks.

Thanks guys...

I had some things going on this weekend and was only able to give it minor attention. I did get to clean up the interior and trunk area of all the dust, crap and spare parts that accumulated over the past 17 months.

Plan is to have the interior finished by mid April and it Starts TONIGHT..!!!

I plan on jumping under the dash after work and cleaning up the rest of the wiring, connecting the vacuum lines under the dash and mounting the stereo system. Tomorrow night I will lay down the Dynamat/Sound Deadener and wire up the stereo/speakers.

Then this weekend the All Black Interior will start going in. I want to at least get done the rug, headliner, seat belts, rear deck and all the plastic pieces including console this weekend

The second weekend in April I want to install the Corbeau GTS II seats, door panels, arm rests and put dash back together.

Hope to be able to drive to get a sticker by the start of the third week of April and get an alignment done.

----------------

Over the next few weeks I also have to make some modifications to the Cold Air Intake(which is why I havent posted any engine pics yet!!). The 90 elbow that is on there now is hitting the engine cover and is collapsed/creased on the bottom and blocking air flow so that wont work. I have ordered a couple different 90 elbows to try and find a better angle for the cold air to sit. I will modify/trim one of the elbows so it fits perfectly.

Then lastly I will pick up a SCT Tuner (I have something up my sleeve for this too) stay tuned..!!!!

I will take some pics of the interior transformation and post up as I go along.
